On February 23, 1896, in New York City, Tootsie Roll was first introduced by Leo Hirshfield, an Austrian immigrant.  The product was named after Hirshfield’s five-year-old daughter Clara, whose nickname was “Tootsie.”  Widely considered to be the first penny candy, this affordability contributed to the growth in popularity during the Great Depression.  The individually wrapped candies can withstand a large temperature range, this made it a sweet treat in American soldiers’ ration kits in World War II.
